The Gaumukh glacier is the source of Bhagirathi and is revered by the devout, who do not miss the opportunity to take a holy bath in the bone biting ice water. Gaumukh is the location where Ganga water flows down from the glaciers. The sages named it 'Gaumukh' because it resembled a cow's mouth in the ancient past. Tapovan is a wonderful destination for those seeking both tranquilly and adventure. Tapovan is 4,463 metres / 14,640 feet above sea level. Tapovan is famous for its magnificent meadows that ring the Shivling summit base camp. It's full with bubbling streams, wildflowers, and campgrounds. Herds of Bharal (blue mountain goats) are a familiar sight from here.
ย ย ย ย ย The trek from Gaumukh to Tapovan has steep ascent, and as we climb, the view of the surrounding peaks becomes clearer. They appear to be just a stoneโs throwย ย ย ย ย ย away. It is also a little wonder why Sadhus and saints choose this spot for extended meditation during the long summer months.
