The temple is the geographic and ceremonial hub of Madurai and is split into a series of concentric quadrangular enclosures surrounded by towering brick walls. It is one of the rare Tamil Nadu temples with four gates facing four directions. This temple consists of four towers, each of which is beautifully painted with hundreds of coloured images. There are an additional eight towers and a hall with a thousand ornamented pillars. The Thousand Pillar Hall is a temple complex that has a museum that comprises frozen stones and bronze statues of Hindu deities.
