Varanasi, also known as Benaras or Kashi, is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. The significance of Varanasi in Hindu mythology is mostly unknown. Benaras is older than history, tradition, and even folklore, and appears to be twice as old. The Ganges River is supposed to have its origins in Lord Shiva's hair before expanding to become the sacred watersourse , we all know today in Varanasi. For than 5000 years, the town has been a centre of learning and culture. Varanasi has long been associated with Hindu revival.
