Kanheri caves tour will take you on a expedition to explore 2000 year old rock cut excavations in the city of Mumbai which is located in Sanjay Gandhi national park spanning over 100 square kilometres. They are about beautiful stories in stone of 2500 years of Buddhism in India.
They are about Buddhist philosophy, schools of Buddhism, rock cut architecture in India , monastic life of Buddhist scholars, Buddhist educational system and Buddhist iconography. The site is on a hillside, and is accessible via rock-cut steps. The cave complex comprises one hundred and nine caves.
Most of the caves were Buddhist viharas, meant for living, studying, and meditating. The larger caves, which functioned as chaityas, or halls for congregational worship, are lined with intricately carved sculptures, reliefs, pillars and rock-cut stupas. There were primarily built as Buddhist convent with a university attached to it.
The tour last approximately 90 minutes of exploring these excavations lying on a small hill. For a fitness freak, this give him an opportunity of small hiking activity.
The caves are best enjoyed in little rainy day for citizens of Mumbai, who come here for monsoon picnic to enjoy waterfall or between October to March.
